I met “Ellie” today to admit her to our hospice program. Ellie was diagnosed last year with cancer. Upon entering her home, she embraced me with kindness and love. She was very spiritual and religious, which gave her strength. She spoke the language that I could easily relate to. We were alike in so many ways. I instantly connected with her and her joy about life. Grabbing onto positive thoughts also gave her strength to carry on. She was so very real. I feel so honored to have met her today.
PERFECT
She heard “Cancer” just a year ago.
It had already spread to other organs.
She tried radiation and chemotherapy,
but her cancer continues to grow.
Twelve years ago, her husband died suddenly.
She, along with her two young children,
witnessed him being shot in their home,
by a determined and tenacious gunman.
She has since founded a non-profit organization
that is against gun violence offering support for victims.
“Maybe we had to experience that horrid event
to guide me to create my business.
It gives me grace.”
When asked what helps her cope,
I wasn’t surprised to hear her say;
“I pray. I cry. I journal. I hug my kids.”
So obvious, the perfect tools to help her survive.
She is appropriately sad and grieving
as she is only forty-five years old.
Her strong Christian faith gives her strength.
“Heaven will be wonderful for all.”
She was so gracious; she was so real;
with such a positive attitude about it all.
She is handling things the only way she knows how;
but to me, I saw her as
Perfect.
