We received a Palliative Care referral for “Eddie”, who will be turning fifty-seven in a few weeks. He was diagnosed with cancer just five months ago. He is currently undergoing chemotherapy which is leaving him with many side effects.
I called Eddie to check in with him. He amazingly so surprised me with his practical thoughts. He was so realistic and accepting of his situation. His two sons live locally and are very involved and supportive. Eddie gets tremendous support from his family and many friends.
He spoke about his hospice work and how thankful he is to have had that experience. He shared how it taught him so much about end-of-life and what to expect.
He is a perfect example of looking at the positives in life. He sees all of his support which helps him downplay the challenges that come along with a cancer diagnosis.
I spoke with him about journaling as his words were so beautiful and amazing. I feel honored to have spoken with him this afternoon.
TOTAL ACCEPTANCE
He was diagnosed just five months ago;
esophageal cancer that had already spread.
He says he is thankful it is he with the cancer;
“It would be so much harder for anyone else.”
He worked for our hospice many years ago
delivering medical equipment to patient’s homes.
It prepared him to understand what is now happening to him;
“My work with hospice has taught me so much.”
He currently is undergoing chemotherapy
which leaves him nauseous and extremely weak.
He has no appetite and is losing weight.
Weakness limits his ability to get things done.
He has such a positive attitude about his life.
He so appreciates his family; his friends.
“I have always been helpful to those around.
It is why now, so many are here for me”.
He has a strong Catholic faith
which gives him tremendous support.
So, when I asked him how he was coping with it all;
I wasn’t surprised at all to hear his amazing reply.
“I am okay with God; with my family; my kids.
I am blessed.
I am ready.
I am at peace.”
