HE SEES

We received a referral to admit, thirty-six-year-old, “Joshua” to hospice.  Joshua suffers from Multiple Sclerosis.  In his early twenties, he had eye problems.  An eye doctor told him he had MS due to what was impacting his vision.

 It is so sad that someone so young should be experiencing such losses.  The moment I walked into his home, he had me with his “Hello”.  He was so engaging and upbeat.  He used humor to cope.  He was so real and practical.  He calmly spoke his truth.  He has fully accepted his fate without any fears or concerns.

It made me think, “Why are we always so surprised when someone so young is wise beyond their years?”  I believe that Joshua has had many other lifetimes to learn; and now, to teach. Thank you, Joshua.

HE SEES

He was only twenty-two years old

when he heard Multiple Sclerosis.

He did okay for the next ten years;

then, suddenly, MS grabbed the reins.

He could no longer walk due to weakness.

He had to quit his job and go on disability.

Fortunately, he had lots of family and friends nearby;

along with his wife and their one-year-old daughter.

Four years ago, his wife left him;

“She didn’t want to face my illness”.

He has his, now five-year-old daughter, half time;

while his mother is his primary caregiver.

He is such a practical man.

He sees the truth in his life.

He accepts what is, without regrets.

He has no fears or concerns at all.

When I asked, “Why hospice now?”, he replied,

“To help me die.  I’m ready”.

When I mentioned his upcoming birthday, he said,

“I hope I don’t see that day come”.

He has strong Morman beliefs.

He knows he is going to heaven.

His daughter will tell him now and then,

“I will see you, Daddy, when I come to heaven.”

He has lost weight due to no appetite.

He has pressure sores from lying in bed.

He is dependent with so many needs,

but sees life so real; so true;

                   so natural.
